Last week I asked you to call your senators and tell them to vote against every element of President Barack Obama’s gun ban agenda.
Your calls are working! I’ve received numerous reports that NRA members are lighting up the phone lines and our senators are definitely hearing from us.

HOWEVER, now we need to take our phone campaign to the next level.
There are 20 U.S. senators, in particular, who hold the fate of your freedom in their hands.

These senators represent states where gun ownership is respected and our Second Amendment freedoms are revered.

But right now, they’re facing huge pressure from the gun ban lobby and Barack Obama to support Obama’s extreme gun control agenda!

So please, call each of the senators below and tell them to vote NO on any gun ban…NO on any magazine ban…NO on criminalizing private firearm transfers…and NO on any gun registration scheme.
Sen. Max Baucus 202-224-2651
Sen. Mark Begich 202-224-3004
Sen. Susan Collins 202-224-2523
Sen. Joe Donnelly 202-224-4814
Sen. Kay Hagan 202-224-6342
Sen. Martin Heinrich 202-224-5521
Sen. Heidi Heitkamp 202-224-2043
Sen. Tim Johnson 202-224-5842
Sen. Tim Kaine 202-224-4024
Sen. Angus King 202-224-5344
Sen. Mary Landrieu 202-224-5824
Sen. Joe Manchin 202-224-3954
Sen. Claire McCaskill 202-224-6154
Sen. Mark Pryor 202-224-2353

Sen. Mark Udall 202-224-5941
Sen. Tom Udall 202-224-6621
Sen. Mark Warner 202-224-2023

Spread your calls out over several days if you need to.

And remember: It doesn’t matter if you do not live in these senators’ states – YOU NEED TO CALL THEM. After all, the votes they cast will affect you no matter where you live!

Thank you for your hard work and dedication to winning this battle. Now is not the time to let up! Call each of these 20 senators as soon as you can.

By working together, we can defeat the Obama gun ban agenda and save the Second Amendment!!!

Unorganized Militia of South Carolina

Originally posted by TheGeneral:

The state of South Carolina current has a rather extensive law defining the structure and duties of the National Guard, the Organized Militia, and the unorganized militia. The NG and Organized Militia are easy to understand, but the current law is a bit fuzzy on who the unorganized mitilia really is. Well, proposed bill S.247 (http://www.scstatehouse.gov/sess120_2013-2014/bills/247.htm) would fix that and (basically) state that ALL able-bodies persons over the age of 17 (and legally permitted to own a gun) are officially members of the unorganized militia. Once defined, the other elements of the current law (http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t25c001.php#25-1-80) Section 25-1-10 apply. The proposed bill includes the statement of:

(2) A militia member, at his own expense, shall have the right to possess and keep all arms that could be legally acquired or possessed by a South Carolina citizen as of December 31, 2012. This includes shouldered rifles and shotguns, handguns, clips, magazines, and all components.

and

(3) The unorganized militia may not fall under any law or regulation or jurisdiction of any person or entity outside of South Carolina.

Nice way of negating ANY Federal law that attempts to disarm us or our nasty Assault Weapons and magazines…

God, I LOVE South Carolina….

Letter to SC State Senator Peeler

And, lastly, I sent the following to Senator Peeler:

Dear Senator Peeler:

I am a law-abiding citizen and responsible gun owner, and, as the President of the Clover Pistol & Rifle Club, Inc., am writing to you on behalf of our club’s membership. We are all law-abiding, responsible gun owners from a diverse collection of backgrounds that are focused on the enjoyment of the shooting sports as well as promoting gun safety through education and instruction.

We are saddened by the tragic events in Newtown, Connecticut, and other recent events, but we believe that efforts to impose new restrictions on lawful and responsible owners like us are misguided. In fact, studies commissioned by law enforcement have demonstrated that the expired ban had little effect.

The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution states “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” With respect, I would emphasize that this clearly says “shall not be infringed”. In fact, in D.C. v. Heller, the U.S. Supreme Court found that the Second Amendment is an individual right intimately tied to the natural right of self-defense.

Your strong support for the rights of South Carolina citizens and, specifically, your record on gun rights remains a cornerstone of the service you provide us and earned you a very well-deserved “A” rating from the NRA. We ask that you maintain this strong stance in the face of media and political criticism and support common-sense, rational, and constitutional legislation in our state..

We urge you to continue to represent the interests of your constituents in South Carolina, but, more importantly, honor the letter and the spirit of the words that you spoke upon beginning your term of office,

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I am duly qualified, according to the Constitution of this State, to exercise the duties of the office to which I have been elected, and that I will, to the best of my ability, discharge the duties thereof, and preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of this State and of the United States. So help me God.”

Senator Peeler, please continue your support and defense of the Constitution of the United States and that of the great state of South Carolina.

Yours sincerely,

Dan Bond, President

Clover Pistol & Rifle Club, Inc.

Letter to Governor Haley

I also sent the following to SC Governor Nikki Haley:

I am a law-abiding citizen and responsible gun owner, and, as the President of the Clover Pistol & Rifle Club, Inc., am writing to you on behalf of our club’s membership. We are all law-abiding, responsible gun owners from a diverse collection of backgrounds that are focused on the enjoyment of the shooting sports as well as promoting gun safety through education and instruction.

In fact, in D.C. v. Heller, the U.S. Supreme Court found that the Second Amendment is an individual right intimately tied to the natural right of self-defense.

You have demonstrated strong support for the rights of South Carolina citizens and, specifically, your record on gun rights remains a cornerstone of the service you provide us all. We ask that you maintain this strong stance in the face of media and political criticism by continuing your support for common-sense, rational, and constitutional legislation. This is more important now than ever.

We urge you to continue to represent the interests of your constituents in South Carolina, but, more importantly, honor the letter and the spirit of the words that you spoke upon beginning your term of office,

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I am duly qualified, according to the Constitution of this State, to exercise the duties of the office to which I have been elected, (or appointed), and that I will, to the best of my ability, discharge the duties thereof, and preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of this State and of the United States. So help me God.”

Governor Haley, please continue your support and defense of the Constitution of the United States and that of the great state of South Carolina.

Sincerely yours,

Letter written to our U.S. Congressmen

Today, I sent the following to Senators Graham and Scott, and Representative Mulvaney:

I am a law-abiding citizen and responsible gun owner, and, as the President of the Clover Pistol & Rifle Club, Inc., am writing to you on behalf of our club’s membership. We are all law-abiding, responsible gun owners from a diverse collection of backgrounds that are focused on the enjoyment of the shooting sports as well as promoting gun safety through education and instruction.

We are saddened by the tragic events in Newtown, Connecticut, and other recent events, but we believe that efforts to impose new restrictions on lawful and responsible owners like us are misguided. Did you know that violent crime with firearms has declined since the Federal “assault weapons ban” expired in 2004? In fact, studies commissioned by law enforcement have demonstrated that the expired ban had little effect.

The Second Amendment to the Constitution states “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” With respect, I would emphasize that this clearly states “shall not be infringed”. In fact, in D.C. v. Heller, the Supreme Court of the United States found that the Second Amendment is an individual right intimately tied to the natural right of self-defense.

Mr. Biden is quoted as having told The Daily Caller, “And to your point, Mr. Baker, regarding the lack of prosecutions on lying on Form 4473s, we simply don’t have the time or manpower to prosecute everybody who lies on a form, that checks a wrong box, that answers a question inaccurately.” If we are unable, or unwilling, to fully pursue and prosecute the existing laws regarding gun ownership, then what good will new legislation do? Instead of passing useless, “feel good” legislation, our focus should be on strengthening mental health care and improving the quality of data supporting NICS checks (National Instant Criminal Background Check System).

We urge you to represent the interests of your constituents, but, more importantly, honor the spirit of the words that you spoke upon beginning your term of office,

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

We urge that you, please, support and defend the Constitution of the United States.

We are your constituents and we vote. Please represent us.
Sincerely yours,

Dan Bond, President
Clover Pistol & Rifle Club, Inc.

Build Your Own AR-15

Contrary to common misconception, the AR portion in the name AR-15 does not stand for “Assault Rifle”, it is the designation given to a rifle platform designed by Eugene Stoner, Robert Fremont, and L. James Sullivan of the Fairchild ArmaLite corporation. The AR-15 is a lightweight, 5.56 mm, magazine-fed, semi-automatic rifle, with a rotating-lock bolt, actuated by direct impingement gas operation or long/short stroke piston operation. It is manufactured with the extensive use of aluminum alloys and synthetic materials. First built by ArmaLite as a selective fire rifle for the United States armed forces, the design was sold to Colt with the select-fire AR-15 entering the US military system as the M16 rifle. Colt then marketed the Colt AR-15 as a semi-automatic version of the M16 rifle for civilian sales in 1963. Although the name “AR-15″ remains a Colt registered trademark, variants of the firearm are independently made, modified and sold under various names by multiple manufacturers.

Beginning with January’s meeting, we will be tackling a new project: How to Build Your Own AR-15. This will be a recurrent subject of our meetings over the next few months. While there is currently a challenge in obtaining parts, we anticipate increased availability in the next several weeks.

This is supposed to be a fun project that culminates in having your very own AR-15, customized how YOU want it. Given the challenges with buying a completed rifle on the market today, this should interest you.

Our initial discussion will focus on what you need, the guide to use and some recommendations on where parts can be obtained. If you have thoughts or suggestions, please come prepared to share them. We will be using the “Build Your Own AR-15 Rifle” e-book, available from http://buildyourownar15.com/ to take us step-by-step through this process. This book can be purchased for the low price of $10 and includes color pictures throughout the process.

If this goes well, our next group project will focus on building your own AK-47.

Clover Pistol Scheduled to Hold First Concealed Weapons Permit Class

The Clover Pistol & Rifle Club is sponsoring a Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) class on Saturday, 27 October, 2012. This class is ideal as both an entry point to basic firearm safety and ownership as well as meeting the State of South Carolina requirement for CWP licensure.

While the main portion of instruction will take place at the instructors place, the live fire portion of the class will be conducted about 5 minutes away at Sportsman, Inc. in Rock Hill, SC.

The instructor for the class, and Clover Pistol and Rifle Club member, is Mike Bodner. Mike is an NRA Certified Training Counselor, a SC CWP Instructor, and also the membership chair for Gun Owners of South Carolina (GOSC) the State affiliate for NRA. The class will run from 9 a.m. until about 6, with a 30-45 minute lunch break. Students are welcome to bring their own lunch, or there is a Quiznos nearby.

The cost of this class is $75 and we have limited audience size to 6 participants to facilitate learning and as much individual attention as possible. Seats will fill up fast, so if you are interested, please email us at cloverpistol@gmail.com for more details.

Clover Pistol Holds First Class

The Clover Pistol & Rifle Club sponsored its first gun safety class on Saturday, May 19, 2012. William Cornwell, an NRA Certified Instructor, delivered the NRA Basic Pistol Class to 13 attendees. With attendees comprised of both club sponsors, a few residents, and 3 children, the course served as a great introduction to the fundamental principles of gun ownership, safety, and maintenance. Broken down into a lecture session accompanied by live fire at a private range, the course covered the working components of both revolvers and semi-automatic pistols as well as understanding four key safety rules of gun ownership:

  1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
  2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
  3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
  4. KNOW your target and what is beyond it.

Dan Bond, Club President and one of its directors said, “This class was very successful and delivered on one of the core missions of the club: promoting gun ownership and proper gun safety. Ownership of firearms is a fundamental right, guaranteed by the 2nd amendment, but regardless of whether or not one chooses to exercise this right, it is important to understand and learn these fundamental principles of firearm safety.”

After the NRA sanctioned material was presented to the attendees, the group traveled to a private range owned by the instructor to get hands-on experience in applying this newly gained knowledge and familiarize themselves with actually firing a pistol. Mr. Cornwell worked with each student individually to ensure that they exercised safe handling, proper shooting stance, and also included individual drills for accuracy with a wide range of calibers, ranging from .22 LR to .45 ACP. At the end of the day, the instructor allowed those who also brought rifles to shoot. Several participants brought their .22 caliber rifles as well as a .30-30 and an M1 Garand. A few students availed themselves of the opportunity to shoot these rifles under the close supervision of the instructor.

MCF resident Allan Bulkley said, “I feel like I learned exactly what I expected to. The pool house is a good setting for the classroom portion, and William’s range is a bit of a drive but I didn’t mind a bit. It’s a nice quiet, private setting for new people.”

Over the next several months, the Clover Pistol and Rifle Club plans to sponsor additional deliveries of this class, along with the NRA Basic Rifle, NRA Basic Shotgun, NRA Personal Protection in the Home, and is also investigating the availability to offer the South Carolina Concealed Weapons Permit course.

The M1 Garand

Last week, I received my M1 Garand from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Based on everything I read, I was not expecting to receive it until late May through mid-June as I placed the order on 4/17/12. However, fortune apparently favored me and it arrived within 2 weeks!

Included in the hard-shell case along with the rifle was an instruction manual, single target, and one en bloc clip for use. In anticipation of its arrival, I was able to procure 15 additional clips for under $20 on EBay, so I would be ready to shoot this beautiful gun upon receiving it. Unfortunately, this shipment also included a note stating that they were out of slings, but one would be sent when they are back in stock. From what I’ve heard, they’ve been out of stock for months, so I’m not holding my breath on this one. In addition to the rifle, the RM1Special, I ordered 200 rounds of surplus ammunition from the CMP which arrived the next day.

I chose the RM1Special model because I was willing to pay a little bit more to have one in very good condition and this did not disappoint. The Criterion barrel is new, as is the stock, and both arrived in pristine condition. The stock is stained Black Walnut, and felt slightly rough, almost as if they stopped short of a smooth sanding job. This was quickly remedied by oiling the stock a bit, which brought out the details in the grain all the more and smoothed it out. The receiver is a refurbished receiver starting with the serial number 369, which, based on my research would indicate that it was fabricated in July 1945. So while the receiver may not have seen any action in WWII, it’s still a vintage piece of equipment. There was minimal pitting on the exterior of the receiver (only one or two spots), and it was pristine on the interior.

Some history on the M1 Garand, from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1_Garand ):

The M1 Garand (officially designated as United States Rifle, Caliber .30, M1 and later simply Rifle, Caliber .30, M1, and also abbreviated as US Rifle, Cal. .30, M1), was the first semi-automatic rifle to be generally issued to the infantry of any nation. Called “the greatest battle implement ever devised” by General George S. Patton, the Garand officially replaced the bolt-action M1903 Springfield as the standard service rifle of the United States Armed Forces in 1936 and was subsequently replaced by the selective fire M14 in 1957. However, the M1 continued to be used in large numbers until 1963 and to a lesser degree until 1966.

The M1 “is an air-cooled, gas-operated, clip-fed, and semiautomatic shoulder weapon. This means that the air cools the barrel; that the power to cock the rifle and chamber the succeeding round comes from the expanding gas of the round fired previously; that it is loaded by inserting a metal clip (containing a maximum of eight rounds) into the receiver; and that the rifle fires one round each time the trigger is pulled “. After the eight rounds have been shot the clip automatically ejects causing a “ping” noise to occur.

The M1 was used extensively by U.S. forces in World War II, the Korean War, and, to a limited extent, the Vietnam War. Most M1 rifles were issued to Army and Marine troops, though many thousands were also lent or provided as foreign aid to America’s allies. The Garand is still used by drill teams and military honor guards. It is also widely sought by the civilian population as a hunting rifle, target rifle, and military collectible. The name “Garand” is pronounced variously as /ɡəˈrænd/ or /ˈɡærənd/. According to experts and people who knew John Garand, the weapon’s designer, the latter version is preferred. It is available for American civilian ownership through the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

On Saturday, I was able to take the Garand out and fire it for the first time at the Leeds Outdoor Range. I loaded all of my en bloc clips and headed off with my wife, oldest daughter, and some friends from the neighborhood. While we were at the range, I was able to put about 50 rounds through the rifle, shooting at 25 yard and 100 yard distances (the maximum distance at this particular range). Not only was I impressed with the handling of the gun and its accuracy, I found it a great pleasure to shoot! With absolutely no adjustment to the iron sights on the gun, I was able to easily hit a golf ball at 75 yards (golf balls are very fun to shoot with a wide range of calibers). My wife said that I was grinning like a madman after the first clip left the rifle with its distinctive “PING” and she’s probably right.

This is a heavy rifle, you feel its weight on picking it up and you feel it firing from a standing position. That being said, the tradeoff that its weight provides is the absorption of some of the recoil from such a powerful cartridge. Don’t get me wrong, you still feel the recoil when firing this gun, but it’s manageable. In my experience (limited thus far), this is by far the heaviest rifle with the most recoil I’ve ever fired, but it’s a GOOD feeling. I can’t wait to shoot this rifle some more and look forward to the end of this month and the opportunity to carry it out to the known distance range that the RWVA has out in Ramseur , NC.

Own a little piece of history and a great gun to boot: Get yourself an M1 Garand by whatever legal means you can!

Perfect Shooting Weather

Temperature: Reaching 73 degrees
Visibility: 10 Miles
Precipitation: 0.00 inches
Wind Speed: 3 mph (SSW)
Forecast: Perfect Shooting Weather

On Saturday, April 14, the Clover Pistol & Rifle Club had its second unofficial shooting outing at the Leeds Shooting Range.  The day could not have been better and the turnout of shooters was great.  We even had a visitor from Massachusetts come down just for the event (OK, not entirely, but it was a big part of it)!  Eleven shooters made the hour long trek from Lake Wylie to The Sumter National Forest in Chester.  Disclosure: It was only an hour due to the fact that the author of this story believed a GPS and took the long way around.  The shooters ranged in skill from the avid shooters and gun fanatics to first time shooters.  How this is possible is beyond me, but we had 9 rifles, 3 shot guns and 7 pistols for 11 people, and every one of them got a workout (what have I gotten myself into???)

Pistols in attendance:  Sig Sauer P238 (.380), Sig Sauer P229 (.40), S&W M&P, Sig Sauer 1911 Tactical, Springfield XD (.45), Kimber Ultra CDP II (.45), S&W .32 (model unknown), and a S&W 5906 (.40).

Rifles in attendance: M1 Garand (.30-06), L1-A1 (.308), SKS (7.62 x 39), .45 Auto, Savage .22lr, 2 Ruger 10/22, Sig M400 AR-15, Egyptian AK-47.
Shotguns in attendance: 12 Gauge, 12 Gauge super-mag pump action, KAHNs SHOTGUN break action

All told, we spent a little more than 3 hours at the range itself, firing at a variety of targets our Target
Coordinator, Guy Klein, assembled for us. The most popular targets were reactive and ranged from water filled gallon jugs to golf balls. Some members enjoyed shooting the golf balls and driving them further down range, and, at one point, Chris Dickey shot a golf ball with his M1, sending it over 15 feet in the air.

Now it’s time for my top 10:

10)  Guy needs DD due to his antics the night before that almost kept him from the trip (Mmmmm…Moonshine);
9)  Firing at old advertising signs with a shotgun at 10 yards;
8)  Seeing Eva fire a shotgun, and then state, Mother’s day is coming up…This is what I want to shoot Zombies;
7)  The accuracy of the 1911 (it’s not just me, Chris said so too);

6)  Guy the Target Savant coming up with the blind tree target and the golf ball stands…genius even
 the other lane shooters wanted the golf ball target;
5)  The sound of the M1 Garand;
4)  Seeing Emily firing a .22 with dad zoning in on the .45 next to her;
3) Bump firing the AR-15 that pretty much cleared the range of other people (crazy Mass-hole);
2) The M1 Garand hitting a golf ball (crazy Mass-hole); and
1) Enjoying a beautiful day in a national forest shooting with friends.

I’m not sure how much lead we left at that range on Saturday, but it bodes well for future events for the Clover Pistol & Rifle Club.  This will be the first of many events both at this range, the skeet and trap range in Gastonia and of course Sportsman.  Thanks to all the supporters of our first unofficial club event: Kevin Walz, Emily Walz, Jim Knoll, Frank Casillo, Brian Conn, Guy Klein, Eva Bryce, Chris Dickey, Mike Bryce, Chris Adams and Dan Bond.  A great time was had by all!
